Addressing these factors through lifestyle changes is important but can take time, so providing some extra immune support is a smart move.
Luckily the clever honeybee has not only given us honey, but has also provided us with another powerhouse of natural protection: PROPOLIS
Made by bees from plant resins and beeswax, propolis is used to seal, protect and sterilise the beehive. It is used as THE immune defense mechanism for the whole hive and protects against invaders and infection. It is the bodyguard of the beehive and performs the same function when ingested by us.
Research shows Propolis provides immune support and antioxidant properties that offer broad support for immunity, recovery and overall wellbeing.
PROPOLIS ALERT: The better choice for diabetics
Bee propolis has demonstrated antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiviral, anticancer, immunoregulatory actions, and protective effects on the liver, pancreas, heart, and brain. Bee propolis can be considered for glycaemic control because of its high antioxidant properties. More recently, studies have demonstrated that bee propolis results in a significant decrease in the blood glucose levels, serum glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c) levels, and serum insulin levels, with improvement of insulin resistance in patients with type 2 diabetes.
(This information has been extracted from this medical journal)
For anyone suffering from high levels of glucose, propolis may be the answer to keeping your immunity boosted without upping sugar levels as studies have shown

MGO - THE POWER OF MĀNUKA HONEY
New Zealand Mānuka has a long history as a respected medicinal plant, with different parts traditionally used by the New Zealand Māori people as a remedy for skin and digestive ailments, coughs, colds, throat and oral care.
It’s the nectar from the Mānuka flower that makes Mānuka honey so special. In fact, without the flowers of the native mānuka bush (leptospermum scoparium), we would not have Manuka Honey. MGO, the key compound responsible for the potency of Mānuka honey, is naturally formed in the honey from the Mānuka nectar.
The higher the MGO level, the higher the potency of the honey. This is why choosing a Mānuka honey that has been certified for MGO content is so important, so you know exactly what you are getting.
Here's a guide to help you select the right potency for your needs:
As a general guide we recommend:
+ For use as a nutritious sweetener, for culinary use as combined with daily protection – go for the lower numbers: MGO 100+
+ For prolonged and perhaps more robust protection and wellbeing enhancement – go for MGO 250+ or MGO 400+. We recommend opting for both the latter seasonally: the MGO250 during the spring and summer months and the MGO400+ for the autumn and winter months.
+ For more acute/targeted use, aim for the higher numbers – MGO 550+
HOW TO USE MĀNUKA HONEY
Mānuka honey is a delicious natural wholefood perfect for the entire family (over the age of 1 year). It’s so versatile and easy to include into your daily routine:
• Enjoy straight from the spoon.
• Dilute in water to refresh during or after exercise or fluid loss.
• Add to smoothies, or drizzle over yogurt, granola, or your favourite breakfast.
• Perfect as a soothing natural sweetener in tea or coffee
• Also great for DIY beauty to smooth, soothe, heal and hydrate your skin.
• Mānuka honey delivers plenty of natural goodness regardless of the MGO level you choose. It can be taken daily or as required for more targeted needs and is a family favourite to support winter wellbeing.

Mental health awareness and the importance of routine are both crucial for maintaining a holistic balance in everyday life. Mental health issues affect a significant portion of the population, which is why this month has been all about setting targets and boundaries, checking in with ourselves and keeping checklists to maximise productivity.
Establishing a routine such as a schedule for sleeping, eating, exercise, work and other activities can help reduce stress and regulate our mind set. It can also provide a sense of structure and purpose which can be particularly important for those of us struggling with depression or anxiety. Regular exercise and social interaction are essential components of a healthy routine and have been shown to be an effective way of reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety.
A healthy diet and eating foods with anti- inflammatory properties is also beneficial for our mental health. This tends to be much easier said than done as we understand that a healthy diet generally requires preparation and dedication, which brings us back to the importance of routine, schedules and checklists.
Luckily, there is something we, at MGO Manuka Malta can offer to make the healthy routine a little less taxing. We have developed a seasonal Manuka Routine which will keep your immune system boosted all year round. With Summer fast approaching, MGO250+ or MGO100+ would be your perfect seasonal companion. (Click here to remind yourself which honey is best all year long)
Keeping healthy is not for the faint hearted but neither is it impossible to achieve. However well or unwell you may feel from day to day, waking up, eating well and exercising is a step in the right direction; seeking help without shame and finding healthy ways to cope with stress can also be important tools for managing and maintaining a healthy mind.

]]>Founded (and still based) in the small rural town of Te Awamutu in Aotearoa New Zealand in 2006, Mānuka Health is now a leading global Mānuka honey brand.
Mānuka Health pioneered MGO testing in 2008 after the ground-breaking discovery that MGO is the elusive ‘magic Mānuka ingredient’. MGO stands for methylglyoxal - the naturally occuring bioactive compound that is responsible for many of the benefits of Mānuka honey.
Over the past decade Mānuka Health has built MGO into an internationally recognised guide, helping people confidently purchase Mānuka honey based on the trusted science of natural MGO potency.
But that’s not all…
The importance of managing the whole honey-making process from hive to jar cannot be underestimated. Unlike many Mānuka honey companies, Mānuka Health carefully extracts, processes and bottles this precious honey in its own specialised facilities. This means the entire process is closely monitored, guaranteeing optimum quality and integrity at every stage – which is why you and I can enjoy the full benefits of its unique, natural properties in every jar we purchase.
The power of these amazing bee products and their pure New Zealand origin can be experienced with every product in the Mānuka Health range - from premium honey and propolis to lozenges and skin care.

What else can Mānuka Honey help with?
Mānuka Health, Mānuka Honey may improve digestive symptoms such as IBD – Inflammatory bowel disease, which is in the gastrointestinal tract.
There are two main types of IBD: Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Both types of IBD can lead to symptoms like diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Researchers have discovered that regularly consuming Mānuka honey may help decrease these symptoms. Manuka honey has been shown to improve antioxidant status and reduce inflammation in rats with ulcerative colitis.
It is important to note that the above studies observed Mānuka honey’s influence on bacterial infections in rats and in vitro. Further research is needed to fully understand Mānuka honey’s influence on bacterial infections of the bowel.
How can we help our gut?
Feed our probiotics, more prebiotics which are found in Manuka honey!
Prebiotics, like raw honey, are just as critical for gut health because they are made of fiber that our bodies cannot digest. Prebiotics can, however, be digested by probiotics (live beneficial bacteria in our gut). So prebiotics are the food source for probiotics. We need to feed the good bacteria in our guts in order to have a balanced gut microbiota, and a great way to ensure this may be by eating just a tablespoon of raw honey a day along with getting probiotics in our diet. Put raw honey in your morning yogurt for a prebiotic / probiotic “cocktail.” If you do not eat dairy, you can get herbal teas with probiotics and add raw honey.
A balanced gut may improve digestion, and studies have shown that if we take care of our gut health, we have better mental health.

Over the years, many research papers have concluded that the results of their findings show how honey in general, but particularly Manuka Honey, has the potent inhibitory activity against influenza, demonstrating a potential medicinal value.
It’s for this reason that throughout the colder, Winter months, the highest levels of MGO Manuka Honey are recommended. Namely MGO 400+ and MGO 550+.
Whilst we already know that Manuka honey’s antibacterial properties are what set it apart from traditional honey, it is the Methylglyoxal (MGO) which is its active ingredient which is likely responsible for these antibacterial effects.
Additionally, Manuka honey has antiviral, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits which has traditionally been used for wound healing, soothing sore throats, preventing tooth decay and improving digestive issues. Manuka honey also has antibacterial, anti viral and anti-inflammatory properties that may help treat a number or many other ailments, including irritable bowel syndrome, gastric ulcers, periodontal disease and upper respiratory infections.
Manuka honey has been the focus of extensive scientific research, evidencing remarkable natural qualities that set it apart from other honeys! Please have a look at the research paper attached, which describes how Manuka Health, Manuka Honey was researched for “Antibacterial potential of Manuka honey against three oral bacteria in vitro”

Propolis has been used as a traditional health product for centuries, with modern science confirming that the protective properties of propolis have significant benefits for human health.
What are the benefits and why should we take it?
Move aside Turmeric, Propolis is here. And has been for quite some time, actually.
Propolis has been used as a traditional health product since ancient times. It was used to treat sores, ulcers, oral infections and coughs by the ancient Greeks, and was even used as an embalming agent by ancient Egyptians (please don't try this at home!).
Modern research confirms high quality bioactive propolis has remarkable protective properties that support key aspects of human health:
Immune support & Winter Wellness - Propolis provides powerful support for immune defences and aids balanced immune function. It's a great winter supplement to help support resistance and recovery from common winter ills.
Antioxidant protection - Propolis provides proven antioxidant activity for cellular health and protection. Antioxidants are important for healthy aging and are particularly supportive for athletes, city-dwellers and those with stressful lifestyles.
General Wellbeing - The powerful immune and antioxidant benefits of propolis provide broad support in the body for overall health and wellbeing.
Ongoing research indicates that high quality bioactive propolis has potential therapeutic use in the areas of:
- Immune health
- Antioxidant protection including for age-related conditions

- Liver health
- Oral health
- Respiratory health
- Wound healing and skin health

However, at what age is it safe to give any honey to children?
All honey, including Manuka honey should not be given to children under 1 year.
Why?
A Bacteria called Clostridium Bacteria, which causes Infant Botulism, usually thrive in soil and dust, however, they can also contaminate some foods, honey in particular.
Infant Botulism can cause muscle weakness with signs like poor sucking, a weak cry, constipation and decreased muscle tone – floppiness.
The best way that parents can prevent Infant Botulism is by not giving their baby and small child honey, or any processed foods which contain honey, like cereal bars, biscuits etc, until their child’s first birthday.
Once your child gets older, you can start giving them honey because their digestive systems mature, and their mature digestive systems move the Clostridium bacteria spores through the body before they can cause any harm.
How can I give my child Manuka honey every day?
You can add it to their cereal, add a teaspoon to their smoothie, drizzle over their pancakes or just give them a teaspoonful as a delicious and healthy treat.
How much Manuka honey should I give my child?
Manuka Health, the makers of our delicious Manuka Honey, recommends at least 1 teaspoon every day.
Helpful tips!
-Avoid high heat, like baking or boiling. When you bake or boil your Manuka Honey, you can destroy some of the beneficial properties and components in your honey.
-Remember to brush your teeth. Although honey is a natural sugar, it’s still a sugar, so be sure to always brush your teeth after your daily dose of Manuka Honey :)

1 – Eat the rainbow
One of the best ways to support your immunity with nutrition is by nourishing your body. Try and get as many different colours of fresh fruit and vegetables into your daily diet as possible. Yellow peppers, red tomatoes, green lettuce, you get the picture :) Ideally you eat seasonal fruit and veg and be sure to eat a large variety so that you benefit from the different vitamins and nutrients from different foods.
School tip - avoid sweet treats in lunch boxes and swap for nuts and fruit coated in yoghurt – they’re packed with zinc, which is also a really effective immunity booster.
2 – Vitamin C
This one is an oldy but a goody. Vitamin C is one of the most well known vitamins for keeping your immunity strong. This vitamin can easily be obtained through diet as it is abundant in many foods, such as: citrus fruit, red and green peppers, strawberries, blackcurrants, broccoli and spinach. Make your family a smoothie every morning and add a teaspoon of Manuka Health Manuka Honey for extra sweetness and an extra dose of immunity boosting goodness.
3 – Stick to a sleeping schedule
Try and get your kids to sleep at the same time every day. When your children are tired, their body resistance decreases, making them more vulnerable to getting sick. Make sure they get enough sleep and help their bodies fight any diseases that come their way.
4 - Personal Hygiene
Teach good hygiene. No sharing of drinks or food and always coughing or sneezing into your elbow and washing your hands frequently. Hand washing is so important, at school, when they get home, before they eat, make it a routine. These are some tools to encourage personal hygiene after all, prevention is always better than cure.
5 – Spend time outdoors
In Malta we are lucky to have lots of sunshine, so be sure to get enough Vitamin D by spending time outdoors. Getting enough Vitamin D can help support your immune system, which is particularly important in these Covid times.
By helping yourself, and following all health guidelines, you’ll be more likely to have a strong and healthy Autumn and Winter. Our final recommendation? 1 teaspoon of MGO400+ or MGO550+ a day :)
]]>
MGO™ 250+
• Come September, and the start of Autumn we recommend upping your MGO dose. The 250+ pot is a significant increase as weather starts cooling down and beach days become less frequent.
MGO™ 400+ & MGO™ 550+
• We’re pairing our 400+ and 550+ together for the cold, Winter months. From December to February colds, flus and viruses are the most common and the most catchy. With everyone at school and most working in close proximity at an office the higher doses of our honey pots are recommended.
A recommended daily dose for all Manuka honey pots is one teaspoon.
As a little reminder, whilst local honey is endemic to where we all live, it’s the MGO in our Manuka Honey which makes it special. Have a look at our previous blog for more information on why our Manuka Health is so special.
Please note that these are just guidelines, if you are immune-compromised, work in a high risk environment or around a lot of people, we recommend sticking to a high MGO rating for more immunity protection all year round.

Let's have a look:
Manuka Honey in its pure form, can only be sourced from NZ and some parts of Australia as it is here that the Manuka Tree grows and flourishes. The flowers produced by the Manuka tree naturally produce methyglyoxal (MGO) which is the active ingredient responsible for an array of health benefits and THE reason why Manuka is so sought after.
The MGO rating is what guides consumers in their quest to find a pot of Manuka Honey which suits their lifestyle. In simple terms, the higher the MGO number on your Manuka Honey pot, the higher and more potent the health benefits, which include:
-Increased Immunity
-Healing Properties in wounds
-Balance out the bacteria in the gut
-Anti-inflammatory
-Anti-Viral
-Anti-bacterial
-Antioxidant
-improves digestion
-Overall health
-Natural sugars
-Soothes sore throats
If used together with conventional science, Manuka Honey may increase overall healing process.
