Is using a metal spoon to serve honey bad or harmful?
We get this question a lot, so we thought we'd answer your question 😊
The idea that metal spoons may harm honey due to the acidic nature of honey, stems from an old wives tale. That said, some people tend to avoid using metal spoons to scoop out their honey for a few of the following reasons:
· Potential Chemical Reaction: While honey is acidic, it is generally not enough to cause a significant chemical reaction with most metals. In fact scooping your honey with a metal spoon is such a quick movement that corrosion of metal is highly unlikely. Over time, if honey is left in contact with certain metals (like copper or aluminium), it might cause a slight oxidation or change in taste. Stainless steel, is non-reactive and generally considered safe to use with honey.
· Taste Change: Some people claim that using metal spoons can alter the flavour of honey slightly, especially if the metal spoon has any impurities or if the honey is stored for long periods. Again, this is more of a concern with reactive metals, not stainless steel.
· Sticky Residue: Metal spoons tend to collect sticky honey, which can be harder to clean. Wooden or plastic spoons are sometimes preferred because they don’t absorb as much stickiness.
In conclusion, using a metal spoon for honey isn't harmful or bad, nor does it change the chemical composition of the honey, and stainless steel is the preferred metal option. Wooden spoons, are a fine alternative for those who simply prefer to opt for a more natural server😊
